Alex Katz is an artist known for his figurative works of art.


Katz is best recognized for his paintings, sculptures and prints, which feature bold lines and flat colors. In addition to depicting scenes in New York and Maine, he has created sculptural works he calls "cutouts," which showcase the front and back of figures.


He received numerous awards such as the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for Painting in 1972, and Pratt Institute's Mary Buckley Award for Achievement and the Queens Museum of Art Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1987.


Katz's work is in numerous museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian Institution. In 1996, the Colby College Museum of Art opened a new wing dedicated to the work of Alex Katz including over 400 pieces of his work.
