Provenance

The Karlin Collection

Woodland Brook, ca. 1915 was executed near Redfield’s home north of New Hope, Pennsylvania. Painted en plein air and in a single session, this work captures the sublime light of a sunny winter day. Known for his masterful snow-covered landscapes, Redfield braved the cold and the challenges of freezing paint to create his uniquely American Impressionist scenes. A work titled Woodland Brook, most likely the present painting, was shown at the Special Exhibition of Work by Edward Redfield and Others: Art Institute of Chicago (including paintings by Redfield, J.W. Alexander, W. Irvine, M. Sterne, and sculpture by C. Beach), December 12- 1916- January 2, 1917, cat. no. 131.

This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on Redfield by Dr.
Tom Folk.
