Alphonse Mucha rose to prominence in the late 19th century when he was commissioned to create a poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt’s production of Gismonda in 1894. The resulting design, characterized by its elongated format, muted pastel tones, and ornate details, broke away from the conventions of traditional advertising. The poster was an instant success, launching Mucha’s career and setting the standard for Art Nouveau design.

What set Mucha’s posters apart was his ability to merge fine art with commercial appeal. At a time when posters were largely utilitarian, Mucha elevated them to the realm of high art. His designs often featured elegant women surrounded by intricate floral motifs, decorative borders, and soft, naturalistic colors—a style that came to be known as "le style Mucha."
